There has been a shift in the academic focus of schools all over the country. More and more educators have realized how important an allencompassing education is versus the traditional check box that covers reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. Out of the emergence of this broader thinking came the concept of SEL: Social Emotional Learning.

At COA, we envision a studentfriendly report card with clearly defined learning targets aligned to high quality, balanced, rigorous assessments that will prepare our students to be college and career ready. Our Standards-Based Report Card seeks to provide meaningful feedback so both students and parents can track student progress toward mastery of key aca- demic concepts, reflect upon strengths and weaknesses, and identify multiple pathways to deepen learning. This is the vision of COA for our 2020/2021 school year.
In January, we celebrated the 100th day of school and we had a lot of fun. Second Grade Teachers, support staff, and students put in so much effort into celebrating that day. We loved seeing how our staff dressed up as 100 year-olds and encouraged their students to do so. We love seeing all the creativity shine through from all of our staff members!
In January, we held our Annual FAMILY SCIENCE NIGHT and we had a huge turnout! We were pleasantly surprised to see so many of our families to come and participate, although this event has always been one of our most popular family events throughout the years. We were really pleased to see how parents and their children worked together at the various stations. Thank you to all the organizers and volunteers that helped make this event happen!
MATH COMPETITION with our 3rd Graders went great! This event was organized by COA Intervention Department in collaboration with Curriculum Coach, Nicole Strobel. The event was hosted by Mr. Tim Strauch, who did an amazing job, as always, bringing lots of laughs and keeping the event rolling. Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this event possible. Congratulations to all the participants for being chosen to compete and congratulations to all the winners of this year’s Math Competition! We hope to see some of you back again next year along with some new faces as well!

Children are invaluable assets of our country and they will assume roles of significance and leadership when they soon grow up in the future. While it is commendable that we are doing all that we can, including offering all resources our children need to do well in lives, we should exercise caution not to be too obsessed with their weaknesses and failures, but should instead accord them with the due recognition they deserve for every achievement that they have achieved. Knowing that the deepest principle of human nature is the craving for recognition, our school, Community Outreach Academy (COA), subscribes to the belief that appreciation can make a day and even change a life. We understand the importance of recognition in driving motivation and contributing to the success of children. To this end, we put in place various measures at school to ensure that all achievements of our students do not go uncelebrated.

COA Elementary School hosted its 8th annual Talent Show at the beginning of November, and it was a wonderful success! The show included 13 numbers performed by the various clubs from COA’s After School Program, such as the French Club, Ukrainian Club, Fitness Club, Gymnastics Club, Dance Club, Violin Club, Mental Math Club and more. All in all, there were about 100 performers at some point throughout the evening.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the concept of seasons … seasons of the year, seasons of holidays, seasons in our years on this earth and particularly the harvest season that is upon us: Harvest is the season to reap the rewards of seeds well-planted and well-tended.
In another era our grandparents and great-grandparents survival was dependent on their ability to farm – to plant and water and maintain and prune and then eventually – harvest. Everyone in the family had responsibili-ties to ensure that the farm produced a healthy harvest. From that harvest the family would meet their needs; they would sell some, they would share some, they would store some and they would then have food through the long cold winter.

I am excited to announce to all of you a change that is coming next school year for the Com-munity Outreach Academy schools. Starting next year, 2020-2021, we will be making an extraordinary change in order to meet the needs of our expand-ing program as well as providing the best possible edu-cational experience for our students. Starting next year the Middle School will be expanding into 6th grade making our school a true 6-8th grade Middle School.

Hello, my name is Katherine Mickela and I am proud to announce that I am the Kindergarten and First Grade Curriculum Coach. I have had the pleasure with working with preschool through 8 grade the past 15 years. My experience have ranged from being a substitute teacher, tutor, and teacher. In these different job statuses I have worked closely with other th ing. I believe it is important for every student no matter what age that they are empowered to reach their fullest potential. I am very excited to work with these grade levels to help their students have amazing academic success. In my spare time away from school I love to spend time with my amazing family and friends. I live in Orangevale with my husband Christopher, our son John, and our Aussie Chloe.

Our school’s leadership team has worked hard this summer to help us continue the tradition of excellence here at Community Outreach Academy (COA). Summer is upon us once again and parents are beginning to plan for their children's days without a school schedule. Dreams of days filled with family, friends, freedom and laughter are in students' heads as they say goodbye to another school year.
However, a nonacademic summer can cause students at every grade level to regress two to three months in their academic skills unless something is done. Fortunately, summer is an ideal time for students of all ages to strengthen their academic skills in fun ways while still having plenty of time left over for other summer activities. All it takes is for them to start new habits that can help them close any learning gaps and perform at higher levels during the upcoming school year.
Снова настает лето и родители начинают планировать дни своих детей без школьного расписания. Студенты начинают мечтать о времени, связанном с семьей и друзьями, о свободе и радости которые ожидают их после окончания очередного учебного года. Вместе с этим, если дети прекратят академические упражнения летом , это может привести к тому, что они могут существенно утратить свои учебные навыки и знания. Лето - это идеальное время для студентов всех возрастов, которое можно использовать для развития академических навыков, используя упражнения в игровой форме. При этом, можно успеть и отдохнуть. Все, что для этого нужно - это выработать новые привычки, которые помогут преодолеть любые пропуски в обучении и вывести студента на более высокий уровень в следующем учебном году.
We have many active parents/volunteers in our school and we highly appreciate all of their involvement and dedication. On May 7, 2019, delicious lunch and gifts of appreciation were provided for them. We really appreciate all of our parent volunteers and feel so grateful to have them as a part of Community Outreach Academy. Natalya Yasinskiy volunteered more than 150 hours this school year! Students who come to school on time are the most successful individuals. Getting to school on time is one of the most crucial determining factors of a student’s success, not only while in school, but as an individual who will be able to self-manage in the future. Students who are excessively tardy will fall behind in academic achievement because, by missing the instructional time, they miss the most vital part of the day. Morning instructional time serves as a core foundation for students’ success by setting an objective for the day.
