Roman Prishlyak, Lead Teacher

012 774A0047My name is Roman Prishlyak and I'm so excited to be working at this amazing school! This will be my third year teaching at COA. Teaching is more than a job for me - it is truly a passion! I love learning and I hope to instill the same passion in my students!  I graduated from Sacramento State University with a B.A. in Liberal Studies and have obtained my Teaching Credential from National University. I have also studied at Sierra College where I obtained an A.A. degree in Elementary Education and an A.S. degree in Photography. Furthermore, I have also worked for the San Juan Unified School District and for Twin Rivers Unified School District. While working for San Juan Unified, I had the opportunity of being a Child Development Assistant. During my two years with Twin Rivers Unified, I had the privilege of working as a Substitute Teacher at various schools. When I am not teaching, I am traveling the coast of California, spending time in the mountains, or relaxing at a lake with my wife and our two children.

Teaching is a family tradition. My grandmother, mother, father, husband and I are teachers! In addition, my niece and son are teachers! Lifelong learning is a passion for us. We enjoy travelling and reading.   I grew up in the mountains about an hour from here. My family was very involved in the community so I am pleased to have found a school that values community involvement and Christian values. My daughter Beth, is studying Theater.  Our family enjoys camping, kayaking, hiking, and attending church. We have three cats, a dog and fish. Having children of my own, I am sensitive to the needs of working moms. I have taught since 1990 which included Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, 3r Grade, 4th Grade, 6th Grade, and English and History at the middle school level.  I have enjoyed the changes and challenges. However, I am thrilled to have 4th Grade again. I am energetic, fun, and committed to providing an enriching learning environment for each of my students. I set up my classroom to be supportive, safe, and active.

Hello! My name is Caleb Meyer and this is my Third year teaching at Community Outreach Academy. I graduated from California State University, Chico with a B.A. in Liberal Studies with an area of concentration in Mathematics. I stayed at Chico State to obtain my Teaching Credential. I am from a large family and am the oldest of 5 children. When I am not at work, you can find me running, partner dancing, working out, in nature, or drinking coffee. My favorite part of teaching is building a connection with students and teaching them to love themselves and connect with others around them. This year I am working on a teaching style called The Daily Five and a teaching philosophy called Love and Logic, both of which put power in the hands of the students by giving them choices and opportunities to think for themselves. Students get to experience the joy of success that comes with good decisions and the responsibility that comes with making the wrong ones. I love COA because of the supportive administration team, the chances we have to improve at our practice, and the school’s chosen classroom management model, Capturing Kids’ Hearts. I am excited to work with you and your student this year!

Amy Meyer

Amy Meyer 4th Grade Teacher COA ElementaryHello! My name is Amy Meyer and I have been called to the best job in the world. I have taught from Redwood City, to Folsom and now here at COA. I graduated from Saint Mary’s Moraga, CA. and received my B.A. in English. From there I went on to get my credential at The College of Notre Dame in Belmont, CA.  I have taught fourth grade for 8 years, first grade for 2 years and music to all grade levels for 4 years.

My husband and I have raised 5 children, 4 of whom are attending various colleges in California and Nevada. We have one son in high school. I love to lead worship, participate in choir, and work at Oak Hills Church Summer Arts Camp for at risk youth. I enjoy baking, cooking, hiking, restoring old furniture and relaxing when I am not at work. My favorite part about teaching is being able to work with families and support the whole child. My belief is that love and service are imperative to learning which comes as a result of commitment to serving our young people and their families in a community of likeminded people. COA is the perfect place for students, teachers and families to reach for their dreams. Thank goodness God found me this perfect home.

Courtney Dean

Courtney Dean 4th Grade Lead Teacher COA ElementaryGrowing up in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains has made me a country girl at heart. I love the outdoors and derive great pleasure from the wonder of discovery. My home town of Grass Valley was established as a mining town and is an area rich in History.

My earliest experiences with children came with volunteering in elementary and Sunday school classrooms. But only after a very significant day in 7th grade when it had occurred to me that the teaching profession was where I was headed. I went on to receive my degree and credential at Chico State University. And made my way back to Grass Valley to hone my skills as a teacher.

I believe there are great dividends in learning with laughter and fun as was modeled by my wonderful elementary school teachers. If you were to pop your head in my classroom during the day you might see me break out in a silly song, illustrate an example through pantomime, make a goofy face, or tell a little joke.

This is my 12th year in education. In that time I have taught 2nd grade at a Private Christian School, Junior high/high school independent studies, 6th grade here at COA and now 4th grade - a dream come true for me. I am so excited to be able to share the rich history I grew up learning about from my own home town.

What I love about teaching most is the opportunity to touch the lives of so many precious young people each day. I strive to show each of my students that they are loved and cared for and instill in them life skills that will carry them on to future successes.
