We are having a great year of learning at the Community Outreach Academy! Every day is filled with excitement and new discoveries. It is a joy to have such bright scholars and supportive parents as part of our school’s community. Our school takes both academics and discipline very seriously as we strive to support the growth of responsible citizens in our society.
This is my tenth year with COA. As a site manager, I get to spend a big part of my day with the students and teachers.
Each child is different and requires a different approach; there- fore, as a team of educators we do our best to ensure that all students have an opportunity to learn to the best of their abilities.

Community Outreach Academy takes student attendance very seriously. We are very pleased with our student attendance levels and are grateful that our parents take this area of education very responsibly. We are nearing the time of year when some families may consider going on vacations, such as trips to Mexico, Hawaii, cruises, etc., and are forced to miss school. It is the school’s responsibility to inform our parents about the laws of school attendance in California. Below are the laws that relate to school attendance and the consequences students and parents may face in the events of missing too many days or hours of school without a valid reason.

COA Elementary will only offer INDEPENDENT STUDY for students in extreme situations such as:
► Student is scheduled for Medical or Dental Surgery (documentation from doctor required).
► Student has a severe Medical condition that requires an extended absence (documentation from doctor required).
► Student needs to attend a funeral of a close family member out of town or state (provide written statement/documentation).

In November / 2017, COA held an annual Parent Workshop dedicated to educating and informing parents on the report cards, assessments, awards, school app, Gradelink, and other tools that are used by School to measure the students’ academic progress. It was a great hands-on practical experience training for all parents.
On behalf of all parents at the COA School Site Council, we would like to encourage all parents to attend these wellprepared, very informative workshops that are held to help both you and your students. The COA Administration and Staff Work very hard and put a great amount of effort to make these workshops very relevant and geared towards our needs; staff is ready to answer any questions you might have - they are there to support you.

We were excited to host our Annual Math Competition during the month of January! This year, we decided to do it during school hours; we wanted to have as many students in attendance as possible, so they can all root for their classmates as well as get inspired to practice their math skills and participate in next year’s competition. One student from each class in grades two through six was chosen to participate based on their math scores and their ability to solve problems quickly. The competition was exciting for all students involved as the problems the competitors were giv- en were also displayed on the screen behind them for the audience to try solve from their seats. Thank you to the many parents who came during school hours to watch their children participate. We know it was a sacrifice to take time from your busy schedules, but we also know that it meant the world for you children to have you there! Thank you! Congratulations to all the participants for being chosen to compete and congratulations to all the winners of this year’s Math Competition! We hope to see some of you back again next year along with some new faces as well!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Though it is difficult to believe, the holiday season is already upon us. There seems to be no escaping the Christmas music and holiday displays in every store and business. I abso lutely love this holiday season! It is a time that we spend reflecting upon many blessings that we have in our lives. This is also a season of giving and teaching our children how to show compassion and generosity for others. With your generous support, we were able to collect over 1,900 pounds of canned foods and donate it to the North Highlands Christian Food Ministry.

Во всех магазинах и офисах играет Рождественская музыка и выставляются праздничные декорации. Я очень люблю этот период года! Это время для размышлений о многих благословениях, которые мы имеем в своей жизни. Это также время, когда мы на собственном примере можем научить наших детей благотворительности, проявляя сострадание и щедрость к другим. В этом праздничном сезоне, благодаря вашей/родительской щедрой поддержке, мы смогли собрать более 1900 фунтов консервированных продуктов и пожертвовать их для North Highlands Christian Food Ministry. Кроме этого, совместно с организацией “Сердце ребенка” мы собираем игрушки для нуждающихся детей, которые живут в странах третьего мира. At COA we have many interventions in place to help students who need additional support in the classroom. Оne intervention is an SST meeting. This is a meeting where a team meets with parents regarding their student. In this meeting the team discusses the student and different ways their stu- dent can be supported.

It is important for every modern artist to be able to transfer the result of his or her artistic talent not only on paper or canvas, but also onto a digital screen. For that reason, this year the Art Club in the After School Program has decided to take their drawing to digital tablets. This type of art is called Digital Art. Drawing on a tablet is not the same as drawing on paper, of course, but the children in the Art Club enjoy this new method of drawing.

My name is Kate Rossle, and I am a teacher at Community Outreach Academy. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology from Sacramento State University in 2015, and recently, I received a Master’s Degree in Teacher Leadership. I have been working at COA for the past seven years, and three of those years, as a physical education teacher. Currently, I am the lead teacher in my department.

This is a rigorous school: It’s difficult to earn honor roll, and we designed it that way on purpose. High-performing schools have high expectations, and our high expectations played a significant role in our outperforming the district last year on CAASPP by 19% in ELA and 24% in math.

My name is Daniella, and I’ve recently been hired as the new Student Support Specialist at COA Elementary. I want- ed to officially introduce myself to you all now that I’m getting more into the flow of things in my new position. Some of you have seen me around and know me a little better than others, but I look forward to getting to know all of you more as the school year goes on.
A little about me and my background. I was born in the United States to Ukrainian parents, grew up attending a Russian church, and received my education in the Ameri- can school system, so I have a pretty good understanding of how the cultures differ and how they intertwine. I’ve gotten the chance to travel quite a bit and love meeting new people of various backgrounds and cultures. My background, education, and travels have served to teach me how beautiful our world is and how amazing people are! People are awesome!!We’re all so unique and talented in our own ways! And kids are the greatest of us all! I’m so excited to get to work with our stu- dents in helping them see their poten- tial! I believe every child is special in his or her own way and every child deserves the opportunity to succeed!

У меня была возможность немного попутешествовать и мне очень нравится встречаться с новыми людьми разного происхождения и культуры. Мой опыт, образование и путешествия - научили меня восхищаться прекрасным миром и удивительными людьми! Люди - потрясающие! Мы все очень уникальны и талантливы, каждый по-своему! Дети же - прекраснее всех нас! Я так рада, что работая с нашими учениками, я могу помочь им раскрыть их потенциал! Я считаю, что каждый ребенок особенный посвоему, и каждый ребенок заслуживает возможности быть успешным!
ON OCTOBER 3, 2017, during the Board of Directors of the Gateway Community Charters (GCC) meeting, an OFFICIAL AWARDS CEREMONY was held in honor of some of Community Outreach Academy’s students; six COA students showed the maximum academic results when tested under the CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress). The awards ceremony was conducted by Lillie Campbell (President of the GCC Board of Directors), Dr. Cindy Petersen (GCC Superintendent) and Dr. Jerry Kosch (Director of Personnel and Academics). The COA school administration congratulates the students who received such high marks and awards and wishes them further academic and life success!

This month, COA was delighted to host another of our annual Family Reading Nights. This year’s reading adventure opened with dinner for all, then kicked into high gear at the photo booths. From there, passports in hand, students embarked for a romp through a world of author- and genre-themed classrooms, broadening their horizons with each new stop. Together, participants discovered that reading has something to offer everyone. Students were treated to a smorgasbord of stories punctuated by travelsized reading-related projects that saw them creating personalized bookmarks and joining in a “bookwalk” for the chance to take home new books as souvenirs of their excursion. While playing games and working together on crafts, students and their families explored new frontiers of reading in pursuit of our mission: making reading a daily event.
We take the safety of our students very seriously at COA Elementary. It is very im- portant that parents and students follow the school’s arrival and dismissal procedures to ensure the safety of every student. Teaching children the importance of following safety procedures will greatly influence them in their adult lives. When you bring and pick up your children to school according to the school’s arrival and dismissal procedures, you are teaching them the value of everybody’s well- being and protection, including other students’, parents’, teachers’, as well as their own.
Our school’s policy is that students are not to arrive to school before 8:00 am (Parent Handbook p.14). There is no adult super- vision available before 8:00 am. We have great concern for our students’ safety and specifically request that students not be left at school before the building is open. We are not responsible for your child's safety if he or she is dropped off before 8:00am.
В начальной школе COA мы очень серьезно относимся к безопасности всех наших студентов. Поэтому очень важно, чтобы родители и студенты выполняли процедуры/требования к доставке детей в школу и забирания со школы. Обучение детей важности соблюдения правил безопасности окажет сильное влияние на их будущую взрослую жизнь. Когда вы следуете правилам доставки детей в школу и забирания их со школы, вы учите их уважать/ценить благополучие и безопасность окружаю- щих людей, в том числе других учеников, родителей, учителей, а также их собственное благополучие и безопасность. Согласно нашим школьным правилам, студенты не должны прибывать в школу раньше 8 часов утра (Руководство для родителей, с.14). До 8 часов утра на территории школы нет рабочего персонала, ответственного за наблюдение за студентами.
Мы заботимся о безопасности студентов и просим Вас не оставлять детей на территории школы до ее открытия. Школа не несёт ответственности за безопасность Вашего ребёнка, доставленного/оставленного вами в школе раньше 8 часов утра.
