COA Independent Study Procedures

COA Elementary will only offer INDEPENDENT STUDY for students in extreme situations such as:

Student is scheduled for Medical or Dental Surgery (documentation from doctor required).
Student has a severe Medical condition that requires an extended absence (documentation from doctor required).
Student needs to attend a funeral of a close family member out of town or state (provide written statement/documentation).

According to GCC Board Policy 03-12 the maximum amount of time that may elapse between when an independent study assignment is made and when it is due shall not exceed the following limits:

Kindergarten: Two weeks.
First through third grade: Three weeks.
Fourth through sixth grade: Four Weeks.

We will NOT offer/allow Independent Study for any other reasons, including but not limited to:
Family vacation.
Non-severe illness (any illness absence will require documentation from doctor if the student is absent for 3 or more days).
Visiting family out of town/state/country.
Funeral of distant relatives.

Any request for Independent Study needs to be discussed with Site Manager at least 3 days prior to the event with proper documentation presented at time of request.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES

All absences without written or telephone excuse will be considered unexcused. Students with unexcused absences will be considered truant. Students must clear absences within  two days after returning to school or the absence may be considered a truancy. Students ill for three (3) consecutive days or more are required to have a doctor’s note.

ACCEPTABLE REASONS FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES

Personal court appearance.
Religious observance or exercise.
Personal illness, medical or dental appointment.
Funeral service of parent, sibling, grandparent or any relative living in the immediate household of the child (limited to one day in the state and three days out of state).
