6th and 7th grade Music Teacher

My name is Marc Marmorstein, and I am the music teacher at COA Middle School. I teach two classes: 6th period choir, and 7th period band. I earned my bachelor’s and master’s degree in music from CSU Sacramento. Before coming to COA Middle School, I taught elementary school for 39 years. This is my second year at COA Middle School. I really enjoy teaching at this school because the students and staff are so friendly and helpful.

My parents were both teachers, and they loved to sing and dance when I was young. That is where my music education began. When I was 6 years old, my older brother started taking piano lessons. My parents noticed that I could play all of my brother’s pieces, so they immediately enrolled me in piano lessons as well.

When I was very young my Dad used to take me to the Santa Rosa High School basketball games. I not only became a sports fan, but became a fan of the high school band which played at the games. When I was in first grade the high school band director would let me conduct the band!

In fourth grade I started trumpet lessons at Burbank Elementary School in Santa Rosa. In fifth grade our family moved to a new city. I attended Wade Thomas Elementary School in San Anselmo. This school had an excellent band, and I didn’t think I was good enough to be in it. But in a few weeks I was selected to be the first chair trumpet player! I continued to play the trumpet throughout elementary, middle school, high school, college, and continue to play to this day.

I have been married for 33 years and have 5 children and one grandson. I enjoy going on walks with my wife, spending time with my family, playing and composing music, and swimming.

In my music classes we will not just learn to read and perform the right notes and rhythms. We will also focus on musicality: playing and singing with beautiful tone and thoughtful expression.
