 CORE CURRICULUM K-5
Brenda Jensen, Curriculum Coach
My name is Brenda Jensen, and I have been teaching in this community for over eight years now. I graduated from CSUSacramento and went on to teach third grade. I have been out of the classroom for almost two years now. I miss my students but have found working with curriculum a valuable and influential job. Curriculum is the framework that our teachers work from, and I enjoy helping them solidify that frame.
Reading/Language Arts - Houghton Mifflin Reading
The Houghton Mifflin Reading series for Kindergarten is a series segmented into 10 themes. Each teacher’s edition book is a theme. Within each theme are resource pages that help guide the teacher in instruction. California Content Standards are also highlighted and located at the beginning of each theme. Some features of the teacher’s edition themes 1-10 include:
· Literature Resource pages that show what read aloud books to use in each week of instruction.
· “Books for Independent Reading” section that highlight books that can be used with students at each level, ranging from easy to challenging.

These assessments include diagnostic planning tools, ongoing informal assessment tools, End-of-Theme assessments and periodic progress assessments. Each theme also includes lesson plans for each week, broken into more specific detail by each day of the week. Built in comprehension check questions, phonics decoding strategies and other skill building help teachers deliver accessible language building to students. Students also have a consumable practice book that correlates to each section in the Teacher’s edition themes. Practice book pages also include spelling and vocabulary building, as well as beginning the earliest themes with letter and sound correspondences and working more towards word building and proofreading by themes 7 and 8. Teachers have access to a book set for each theme. This set includes big books, correlating smaller books, student practice books with blackline masters for the students to take home. There is also a tape with the big book story on it. Teachers also have access to a series of leveled books from early emergent reading to fluent reading which can be used in small groups. Teachers have two additional big books for large group instruction. One is a poetry and nursery rhyme book. The other is an alphabet book.
Houghton Mifflin English
The Houghton Mifflin English series includes a teacher’s edition, and blackline masters sets for Enrichment and Reteach pages that students use. The series is split up into 8 main units, each unit consisting of an element of English Language building. Unit 1 focuses students on just becoming active learners with listening and speaking, and Unit 3 goes right into the Alphabet. Throughout the series, there is also an emphasis on listening to descriptions and personal narratives, and the more complicated skill building comes at the end of the unit with listening to directions. Parts of speech are also worked with each particular unit. Depending on the class, modifications may need to be made with pacing, or differentiated instruction techniques as some of your kindergarteners do not come into our school with Basic communication skills. Each class needs to be assessed and teachers need to work together to develop consistency in instruction, especially in working with EL students.
Scott Foresman Math
The Scott Foresman teacher’s edition is broken into two parts. It encompasses all areas of the kindergarten standards. There are useful manipulatives, an overhead kit, a calendar, a music and rhythm cassette and book, a word problem book, homework and class work practice pages.

Students work in consumable workbooks for all of these units. Many early exercises focus on listening and simple writing that focus students on sounds of letters and the identification of those sounds with pictures shown. These Spelling books are very good for vocabulary and phonetic development. “Meeting Individual Needs” sections are located for each lesson and Unit. These page identify what teachers can do to meet the needs or EL students, as well as pointing out what types of struggles certain students may have with letter sounds. Objectives and Building background sections are located on each lesson, that help teachers understand the main goal of each lesson and how to make each lesson more accessible to students.
Scott Foresman Math
The mathematics curriculum comes with a full set of manipulatives, a calendar, big books to act as introductory materials, and a two part teacher’s edition. There is an additional resource materials package with tests, homework, enrichment pages and reteach pages.

Houghton Mifflin English
The HM English series for second grade begins to really put an emphasis on Punctuation and Grammar, much more than 1st grade. The student edition is made up of 10 units, each unit focusing on one component related to the English Language as well as writing. The beginning units really focus more on parts of a sentence, but students are strongly challenged shortly after unit 1, with writing a personal narrative with Unit 2. For some of our students, this order can be very difficult, as students are still trying to master parts of speech and sentence structure. Skipping units and coming back to them when students are ready to tackle structures of writing, may be beneficial, but skipping the units all together is not advised.Writing in general can be difficult for our second graders, and certain modification can and should be made. However, teaching writing should fall in line with the development of students’ skills in more simple forms of writing, such as complete sentences. Without one, there is no other. Although there is no diagnostic assessment tool that comes with this series, teacher’s can and should use their reading assessments to determine what kind of instruction needs to be offered from this series. If most students have a clear command of at least the simple parts of a sentence and basic grammar skills, then teaching the series according to the teacher’s edition can work fine. However, if students have gaps in their learning, or may not be at a level that they can complete any of these pages independently, then the teacher should and must scaffold the initial assignments, but also be able to offer remediation review to students who may need it. Reteach and Workbook plus pages should be used to reinforce concepts and skills that may be taught in a whole group setting in class. Each class is a little different and each class will come with different challenges and obstacles.
Houghton-Mifflin Spelling and Vocabulary
The spelling and vocabulary curriculum is broken into 36 units which focus on spelling patterns which get more difficult with each lesson. The HM Spelling and Vocabulary is a text series that must be done over the entire year. The highlights of this program include:
· Sample sentences for each unit that help students understand what words mean in the context of a sentence.
· Vocabulary instruction that helps students understand the meanings of their weekly spelling words.
· Proofreading and writing opportunities that re-enforce concepts taught in English and Grammar.
· Review words that help re-emphasize words already learned; follow similar spelling patterns as regular weekly words.
· Bonus vocabulary enrichment opportunities at the end of each unit. Allows teachers to assign more vocabulary and general knowledge skills if necessary.
· There is a very helpful handwriting and dictionary section.
Houghton Mifflin Science
The HM Science series is organized by four main units consisting of Physical Science, Earth Science, Life Science and the Human Body. The essential layout of the text is simple, yet each chapter aligns with the Unit theme. Each chapter starts with a sing along that can be done as a whole class. Geography Skills sections within the book, allow students more experience in understand map skills, cardinal directions and location. Hand sketched drawings, cartoon style captions, visual images and large map locators make the text more interesting and help students get more out of the text.
GRADE 3
Reading/Language ArtsHoughton Mifflin Reading
Houghton Mifflin reading for 3rd grade includes the Teacher’s edition box (6 separate books, one for each theme), teacher’s annotated edition practice book and supplemental materials that aid students who may need extra help support. This may include the English Language Learners Handbook, Challenge Handbook, Extra Support Handbook, and blackline masters for enrichment activities. Within the Teacher’s Edition includes weekly lesson plans that display what can be taught each day. Students also have a practice book that contains activity pages that correlate to each story in the book. There is also spelling practice within the practice book and although these words are in many cases the same as the Houghton Mifflin spelling series words, the pacing may not be the same. However, these pages can be assigned as extra practice that give students an opportunity to have more exposure spelling words they will see and use many times throughout the course of the year. The main difference between the student books for third grade and books for fourth grade is the fact that there are multiple student books starting from level 3.1. Fourth grade and up only has one student textbook for the entire year. The curriculum includes an array of authentic, high interest and motivating stories that capture student’s interest. Some stories may need to be dissected in more detail as students may not have the background knowledge to understand the crucial elements of the story. Teachers do have access to key vocabulary words and extra support materials that make this a little easier to do. Literary response questions come after each story, and quick comprehension questions are displayed throughout each story of the teacher’s edition. The assessment portions of the reading series include the following components:
California Summative tests-given after theme s 2,3,5 and 6 to assess a student’s overall level in language arts, mechanics, and reading skills.
Theme Skills tests-given after each of the six themes, used to assess students progress with skills taught within each theme.
Leveled Reading Passages- used initially by teachers to get a clear idea where students are and what type of instruction is needed and later to show progress in students’ reading level.
Houghton Mifflin English: This is used as the language/grammar component to a complete reading and language arts program. This curriculum includes the following:a teacher’s edition, teacher’s annotated edition for Workbook Plus and Re-teaching workbook as well as Blackline masters for each. To help assess writing, a Support for Writing Tests 4 point rubric booklet is part of the series. This series helps students become proficient in the following areas:
· Grammar
· Capitalization
· Punctuation
· Composition and proofreading skills
The teacher’s edition in this series also helps the teacher with helpful hints, examples on starting each lesson and independent, guided and enrichment practice for each lesson concept. This is also extra practice located at the end of each chapter. Students in this level progress from writing good quality sentences to more complex pieces of writing such as paragraphs. Within this series are also fluency building exercises, graphic organizers, and rubrics, to get students more familiar with organizing their writing. A writer’s handbook section at the end of the book is a reference guide to look up capitalization, punctuation and usage rules. This series can be taught at a different time from reading completely or in a designated ELA block, along with Houghton Mifflin reading. That would depend on scheduling for each grade level.
Houghton Mifflin Spelling and Vocabulary
Houghton Mifflin Spelling and Vocabulary focuses on spelling and vocabulary by breaking up units into words that have similar spelling patterns. With over 30 units of instruction, the HM Spelling and Vocabulary is a text series that must be done over the entire year.
Scott Foresman Science

This grade also has the video cassette tapes that accompany each lab investigation. The four units are made up of Life Science, Physical Science, Earth Science, and the Human Body. There are also science lab kits that accompany this series. These kits contain essential materials to conduct most lab experiments for each unit. The text is broken up into four main units and within each unit, chapters and lessons correlate to each other. Lesson review questions allow teachers an opportunity to assess students’ knowledge of lesson material quickly and easily. Key vocabulary terms are highlighted and listed in text and on the side of each page. Chapter reviews come at the end of each chapter, summarizing the chapter’s main points, vocabulary, reviewing concepts, and using skills. There is also a critical thinking section that allows students the opportunity to apply learned concepts within each chapter. Graphic organizers and scope pages allow students and teachers the opportunity to preview what a chapter will be about, as well as see the breakdown of each lesson within the chapter. Pages in the book are listed with a letter following a number pattern that makes finding pages with the book easier for students.
Social Studies-McGraw Hill- Adventures in Time and Place
This particular series focuses on community and in particular, the idea of looking back to the past, building government and working together. McGraw Hill SRA-Corrective Reading Series Levels A-C (3rd-6th grades)
The SRA corrective reading focuses on students weaknesses in areas of oral reading fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. The entire series is developed on the principal of direct instruction and is phonics based instruction. Each lesson is scripted for the teacher and moves from one short activity to another. Each lesson ends with a workbook activity students complete. The program is broken up into three groups, Level A, B1, B2 and C. Level A deals more with letter sound recognition, and trying to correct student errors with letter sound correspondences. Level A comes with a consumable workbook for each student, as well as a teacher’s manual, and teacher’s guide for each teacher. Level B1 concentrates more on readable text and the program begins to have students decode more words in the context of reading. Each lesson starts with a quick phonics activity, moves into reading text, and moves along with various activities that correspond to each story read. Students complete the lesson with a workbook page.Level B2 and C focus more on picking up miscues as students read. Each lesson has four to five smaller activities that students work through, and the lesson ends with workbook pages. In these two levels, students chart their progress daily on a graph, and are able to see how many words a minute they are reading. For specific information on each level, there is a teacher’s guide that outlines components of each level. The curriculum also comes with a series guide that highlights all three levels, along with a placement test that determines students’ level. The placement test is also available in the SRA reference binder located in the teachers’ room at each site.
